A person reads every report. Corrections are made by hand, to the data — titles, dates, names, which pages belong together — never to the scans, and they can take a while to appear.

[blank line] U. S. Post b6 Office, 138 North 1st Avenue, Oakdale, California, was b7C interviewed at the Post Office on 11/29/71, and furnished the following information:
He recalls an envelope addressed to "Reno Newspaper, Reno, Nevada" because of the unusual address, the unusual handprinting, and the lack of a zip code on the envelope. Although he does not recall precisely from memory when the letter was observed by him, he advised that if the postmark indicates a.m., it would have to have been mailed in the main mail drop at the Oakdale Post Office between 6:30 a.m. and approximately 11:30 a.m. Saturday morning, 11/27/71. If the postmark indicates p.m.,

the letter could have been mailed at any of the varied mail drops within the postal carrier area of Oakdale or at the main Post Office anytime between the late afternoon hours on Friday and the late afternoon hours on Saturday. He advised the Oakdale Post Office is closed on Saturdays, but the front door is open for mail drop at 6:30 a.m. The mail deposited at other drop locations in Oakdale is not normally brought to the Post Office for cancellation until afternoon. On Saturday, 11/27/71, [REDACTED] cancelled all the mail in the main drop and changed the cancellation stamp to p.m. at about 11:30 a.m. prior to going to lunch.

[REDACTED] From records, [REDACTED] advised that a total of 2,267 individual pieces of mail were machine cancelled at Oakdale on 11/27/71, and about 1/3 of this or approximately 750 pieces would have been from the main Post Office mail drop. The remainder would have been brought in by the carriers during the day. [REDACTED] had no knowledge of who might have mailed the letter and advised he knows of no one who might have observed the person who mailed the letter. [illegible trailing text]

[REDACTED] the "Modesto Bee", who had a wire service copy of the letter, advised on 11/29/71, that the cutout printing comprising the contents of the letter came from the AAA final edition of the 11/26/71, "Modesto Bee". Comparison of letter spacings, type fonts, column marks, etc. correspond exactly with the printing in the letter. [REDACTED] indicated that this edition is the Modesto home edition, first copies of which reach the retail box in front of the Modesto Bee Building in Modesto at 2:30 p.m. This edition reaches the Modesto newsboys and distributors about 4:30 p.m. This edition is not sent to the Oakdale area.
