Re: UNSUB; [REDACTED] - SOURCE

On 4/27/72 SA [REDACTED] of the New York Division, who is currently assigned the NORJAK case, telephonically contacted the Seattle Office to relate that he got the impression from talking to Newsweek Magazine representatives, that they more than likely would try to hold off making available [REDACTED] "D.B. COOPER" until a subpoena is obtained, although New York is still trying to obtain these items for review by FBI personnel.
---
[REDACTED] further advised that [REDACTED] to the New York Office [REDACTED] and one copy sent to the Bureau, but none to Seattle. [REDACTED]
---
In addition, New York is sending to Seattle via Los Angeles, 20 pictures of "D.B. COOPER" without a wig which show very prominently a round depression-scar on the forehead. [REDACTED] noted that in listing a contact number, FLEMING used the unlisted telephone number 212-371-8684, an unlisted telephone number assigned to room of MAX PALEVSKY in the Sherry Netherlands Hotel, 59th Street and 5th Avenue, New York City.
---
The New York Division is currently attempting to develop background information on PALEVSKY.
[REDACTED] stated that from what FLEMING stated in his interview with New York Agents, he got the impression that [REDACTED] and "D.B. COOPER" lived in the same general area.
---
FLEMING stated that he came to the Edgewater Inn, Seattle, on Sunday 2/20/72 and it was on that day that he paid [REDACTED] in the presence of "COOPER."

FLEMING advised that Monday, 2/21/72, was a federal holiday and "COOPER" made himself unavailable because he was going to Nevada or because his relatives were visiting at his home.
Since "COOPER" was unavailable on that day, FLEMING and [REDACTED] drove around Seattle looking for secure places to photograph and record an interview with COOPER. FLEMING said that [REDACTED] was an "idiot" because he at first suggested a public park which had too many people and later to another beach which was also unsuitable but they finally located another beach which they accepted.
On the following day Tuesday, 2/22/72, FLEMING interviewed COOPER to get the details of the hijacking and said he actually interviewed "COOPER" over two or three different days. "COOPER" did not use prepared notes but gave the information "off the top of his head."
On the last day that FLEMING was in Seattle, he conducted what he termed a summary interview with "COOPER" which was the same day on which the photographing and recording was done by [REDACTED]
During the photographing a Xerox copy of the three $20 bills was held up by COOPER and was to be included in the picture. During the process, the Xerox copy was dropped and this apparently was what [REDACTED] recalled when he was interviewed.
When asked what he had done with that Xerox copy of the money, FLEMING said he burned it right there on the beach.
SA [REDACTED] advised that [REDACTED] as presented to the Bureau and later to New York was typed by FLEMING himself and the "FORWARD" represents FLEMINGS dream to get a story of the hijacker and of the call which finally started his story on "D.B. COOPER."
[REDACTED] said FLEMING felt at least 90% sure that he had talked to the hijacker while in Seattle and [REDACTED] [REDACTED] felt that probably in his wave of enthusiasm, FLEMING, an experienced newsman, overlooked what are now apparent shortcomings in questioning COOPER.
