Sir:
I received your letter dated Aug. 11th 1972 too early for you to have received two letters I wrote since. some facts: I have known a man [guess: named] Warren Smith since 1936. In [REDACTED - b6/b7C] Smith
[REDACTED - b6/b7C]
and Clair young, and all the other family except [REDACTED - b6/b7C] who I met for the first time in 1963 when Warren Smith brought [REDACTED - b6/b7C] to pier 28 to meet my ship the Oregon Mail.
They returned to Seattle the same night and stayed in the [REDACTED - b6/b7C] [REDACTED - b6/b7C] The Oregon Mail had just came from the far east.

These two facts could establish the date March or April 1963 and the register of the [REDACTED] on that day could establish the fact that there was a D.B. Cooper registered there. I don't know what name he used this night. I do know he told me in 1965 that he [REDACTED] always used the alias D.B. Cooper.
On the 36th of [REDACTED] took a plane from Eureka Calif. to Portland. He would have used an alias. On 1, 2th and 18th of July (before we tried to rob the Tacoma Bank) [REDACTED] stayed in a motel across from the Seattle Tacoma airport and left his bag there. If needed I could pinpoint his room, but never noticed the Motel name. He also registered us as D.B. Cooper and son, in places I could find, but don't remember their names. I believe this is all pertinent information when we take into account that [REDACTED] told me the idea for taking over a plane and jumping out, was [REDACTED]

When he told me this it seemed so wild to me that I never thought they would ever do it. At the same time I figured they might pull something involving a lot of money, and when they did [REDACTED] would avoid me. There is no way in my mind that this could all be a coincidence, unless the witness positively said, "it couldn't be Clair Young." Then I'd have to think one of them had told someone else but to think another person would even use the alias D.B. Cooper is far fetched. If the witness said, "it could be Clair," I would know for sure it was; when you take all the other facts into consider- ation. Then if he Clair Young, has no idea he is being watched he could be trapped. If some one went to Clair and posed as a friend of mine, and told him, "I had figured it all out from the things [REDACTED] told me," Clair would have a deep fear of being brought under surveillance and

would pay a good amount to prevent this. a small tape recorder might be able to get evidence. Im sure that a lawyer can figure this part out better than I - so it would be acceptable in court. I do know that Clair wouldn't be apt to change his living pattern. There is a Clair F. Young in Portland Dir. 6/22 S.W. 45th Ave. Portland Ore. I dont know his middle name, but possible he moved from his Richland, Wash. restaurant. He was losing money. He may have moved to run Clays donut shop. Any questions I can help you with I will answer promptly. Waiver enclosed, as requested. Sincerely Yours, Howard J Hubbell
