Re Milwaukee teletype to Bureau dated 10/8/75 [handwritten: 164-81-14(?)]
Enclosed for the Bureau, Milwaukee, and Seattle is one xerox copy of map drawn by Bureau Agents concerning area near Barker Dam in Joshua Tree National Monument. Also enclosed is one photograph depicting area shown on map.
On the afternoon of 10/8/75, six Special Agents equipped with Bureau metal detectors conducted a search of the area as described by DAVID ARTHUR STAUDT without locating any evidence of buried ammunition cans. These Agents remained on the site the night of 10/8/75 and resumed search at sunrise 10/9/75. They were joined by nine U. S. Marine Corps personnel equipped with Marine Corps metal detectors and entire area depicted on map was searched three separate times. Numerous metal items, such as nails, horse shoes, beer cans, etc., were located below the ground surface and dug up, however, again no ammunition cans or loot was located. Additional photographs of area were taken and are being processed. From explicit directions originally given by STAUDT it is obvious that this is the area he was describing. It is also apparent that he is completely familiar with the area. The only discrepancy in STAUDT's original story is that there are seven concrete slabs located in the parking lot instead of five as STAUDT originally stated.
