The following investigation was conducted by SA ARNOLD J. KUTA:

On April 7, 1975, [redacted] also known as [redacted], Des Moines, Iowa, phone [redacted] was contacted at her request and advised as follows:

---

In late November of 1974, she observed a newspaper article on page 10, section 1, Chicago Tribune, Sunday, November 24, 1974, which carried a story captioned, "D. B. Cooper, $200,000 Leap Still a Mystery" with Portland, Oregon, date line. This article concerned the skyjacking of the Northwest Orient Airlines plane on Thanksgiving Eve of 1971. A part of this article carried a portion of a map and copy of "FBI Artist 1971 Composite Sketch of D. B. COOPER."

After first seeing the article and the sketch in this particular article, she immediately had a feeling she knew the person involved, but did not have the nerve to call the FBI or anyone else at that time.

On several subsequent occasions, she intended to call the FBI and finally about 6:00 p.m., April 4, 1975, she decided to contact the FBI at Davenport, Iowa, but got no response so while she still had the courage, then called the Portland, Oregon, Office.

---

The person she has in mind as a possible suspect in this matter is ROBERT MAXIM LA FONTAINE, 52, who was born January 16, 1923, at Olympia, Washington. He lives some place in the Parkland, Washington, area, phone 206- LE7-5574, and apparently has a prior arrest record, seriousness of record unknown.

He is about 5' 11" tall, weighs about 175 pounds, usually wears glasses, has a slight limp, believed in the left leg, and was a truck driver in Washington, Oregon, California, and Nevada, for many years, and lived in all of those states.

He has also been a patient or inmate at Western State Hospital, a mental hospital, Stillicoom, Washington, on several occasions. He had been a diver in the U. S. Navy during World War II, but she never knew of him having any interest or involvement in sky diving.

LA FONTAINE had previously been [REDACTED - b6/b7C/b7D] [REDACTED - b6/b7C/b7D]

She has no knowledge of his present occupation, if any, but the last time she talked to him on the phone in late 1974, he indicated that he was logging.

About three years ago, LA FONTAINE alleged he had been seriously injured while logging in the woods when a tree fell on him and allegedly smashed a vertebra. She thought this was about three years ago, but paid little attention to it as she considered him a pathological liar.

She never knew LA FONTAINE to use an alias. She believes that he is receiving a Veterans Administration pension as a result of World War II injury. He can get very violent at times and can be dangerous. He has attempted suicide.

She had never seen the sketch of the skyjacker until the issue of the Chicago Tribune dated November 24, 1974, but immediately felt the sketch definitely resembled ROBERT MAXIM LA FONTAINE, described above. She also displayed the sketch to [REDACTED - b6/b7C/b7D] and they likewise believed the sketch closely resembled ROBERT MAXIM LA FONTAINE.
