MERRITT is being considered a suspect in this matter because [redacted] Kansas [redacted] advised MERRITT approached him with a plan to hijack a plane ransoming 70-80 passengers for a substantial amount of money while [redacted]
---
MERRITT was 39 years old at the time of the hijacking, he is 6'1" tall, 195 lbs, ruddy complexion, green eyes, stocky build, has pustular acne, and although he was in the U.S. Air Force there was no indication of his ever having had parachute training in his military service record.
---
MERRITT was shot and arrested after a running gun battle with Louisiana authorities on 12/3/71, just nine days after captioned crime.
---
MERRITT's mother, AGNES MERRITT, of Long Beach, Cal- ifornia, sends part of her social security payments to her son, who is in prison in Louisiana. A source advised MRS. MERRITT just barely gets by financially, and there is no indication that she had access to any money.
---
The Bureau advised by letter dated 9/8/76, that the unidentified latent prints in the case are not identical with the major case prints of JOHN RICHARD MERRITT, FBI number 462249D.
In view of the above described discrepencies between MERRITT and UNSUB in this case, no further investigation will be conducted him at this time.
