RE: HOWARD GATTIS
---
Re Seattle memo of SA [redacted] dated December 15, 1975.
On January 7, 1976, GUY DAVIS ADAMS, 1034 Midway, Olympia, Washington, telephone number 456-6439, advised that he is the executive secretary-treasurer of the Washington State Council of Carpenters, 5828 Pacific Avenue Southeast, Lacey, Washington. He stated that HOWARD GATTIS resembled the composit[e] drawing which he had seen in the newspaper depicting D. B. COOPER. He stated he felt GATTIS was capable of hijacking the airlines, and he was a paratrooper during World War 2. He stated GATTIS was formerly married to [redacted]. He added that approximately [redacted] years ago they were living in Yakima, Washington, and [redacted] appeared he was mentally ill. He recalled that GATTIS, a short time thereafter, was caught impersonating a woman in Selah, Washington, apparently trying to hide from his wife. After their divorce he moved to Seattle where he continued in his profession as a barber and then during the late 1960's he returned to his family home in Yellville, Arkansas.
ADAMS stated that he understood GATTIS lived for a time in a cave as a hermit. He stated he did not know GATTIS' present whereabouts, but believed he was either in Yellville, Arkansas, or Springfield, Missouri.
ADAMS was then shown a color composit[e] drawing of D. B. COOPER and stated it did not appear as similar to GATTIS as did the black and white composit[e] drawing which he had seen in the newspapers.
He described GATTIS as a white male American,

age 52 or 53, 5'9" or 5'10", 165 to 170 pounds, medium build, brown hair, color of eyes unrecalled.
ADAMS stated he would attempt to locate a photograph and address of GATTIS.
On January 26, 1976, GUY ADAMS (supra) advised that he had been unable to locate GATTIS' exact address, however, he had learned that he is residing in Springfield, Missouri, and is a member of The Church of Christ, of which there are only three churches in Springfield. He had determined that GATTIS' eyes were brown in color, but he had been unable to locate a photograph. He suggested that a photograph of GATTIS could be obtained either through Washington State Professional Licenses because of his employment as a barber, or through the Church of Christ in Springfield, Missouri, as their chruch member- ship books contain photographs of all members, including GATTIS.
