The following information was provided to an SA of the San Francisco Division by an United Airlines employee who desired to remain anonymous. This information is being furnished Seattle for analysis and possible lead potential.

The United Airlines (UA) employee advised that an individual whose true name is D. B. Cooper, according to rumor, lived with a UA pilot in Denver, Colorado, for a period of time shortly before the skyjacking. Cooper allegedly was a military trained paratrooper and a skydiver by hobby. This individual is supposed to be an "adventurous type" who supposedly bragged in "private circles" that he could accomplish a feat such as bailing out of an airline plane. Further, through his contact of living with an airline pilot, he allegedly learned many of the "inside" airline procedures from this pilot, including flight patterns and procedures and knowledge of the interior of the airplane and how to open the doors while in flight. Finally, this individual has not been seen since shortly before the date of the skyjack. The individual providing this information insists that this information was a "persistent rumor" in "inside circles" of UA, especially those associated with the UA Denver base; but that "higher up" airline officials squelched the rumors, fearing that it might result in bad publicity for the airline.

Airtel to SAC, Seattle Re: NORJACK

Seattle should consider setting out leads for the Denver Division to conduct all logical record checks for a period of at least two years prior to November 1971 to determine if a D. B. Cooper was re- siding in that area at that time. Denver might also be instructed to attempt to develop information con- cerning UA employees that were based in their area during the pertinent period for interview to either prove or disprove these rumors. Consideration might also be given to setting out appropriate leads for the Chicago Division to contact appropriate UA officials at their Headquarters in Chicago to deter- mine if there is any substance to the above rumor, bearing in mind the fact that previously UA officials allegedly attempted to squelch the rumor.
