Re: Suspect EDWARD J. COOPER Chicago, Illinois

Re Portland letter to Chicago dated 12/3/76.

---

Enclosed for Seattle is one photograph of EDWARD J. COOPER.

On 3/10/76, JOHN M. GUTENKUNST, National Merchandising Manager, Montgomery Ward, Department 74, Chicago, Illinois, advised that he is the immediate superior of suspect EDWARD J. COOPER who is employed as a buyer.

GUTENKUNST described COOPER as a white male, DOB 1/26/36, 5'11", 135 lbs., light brown hair, fair complexion, wears eyeglasses, SSAN 339-26-8045, address 2209 West Greenleaf, Chicago, Illinois. GUTENKUNST advised that COOPER has been working the Pacific Northwest since 1969 and that COOPER also travels extensively throughout the U. S. and overseas.

GUTENKUNST viewed the two artist's conceptions of the unsub in this matter and stated that in his opinion it does not resemble COOPER.

GUTENKUNST described COOPER as a nervous, energetic individual who chain smokes very heavily. GUTENKUNST did not know what brand of cigarettes COOPER smokes. He further advised that COOPER is not a pilot or parachutist but that his military service was in the Aviation branch of the U.S. Navy although GUTENKUNST did not know exactly what COOPER's military occupation was. He further advised that COOPER was a college graduate.

GUTENKUNST advised that COOPER was a social drinker and further that COOPER was a financial conservative with no apparent financial problems.

GUTENKUNST advised that he could not locate any company records that would indicate COOPER's whereabouts on 11/24/71 but that as a general rule, the company's buyers are not on the road during Thanksgiving week.

GUTENKUNST furnished a photo of COOPER.

Inasmuch as the description and mannerisms of COOPER do not appear to be identical with the Unsub, Chicago will leave the setting out of any further leads to the discretion of the office of origin.
