Re Los Angeles airtel to the Bureau, 1/24/77.
On 2/23/77, Mr. JAMES H. BROWN, 3936 East Reno, Las Vegas, Nevada, was reinterviewed by SAs ROBERT J. MC KINLEY [guess: printed as "POBERT J. NC FINLEY"] and EDWARD J. GALLAGHER [guess: printed as "PDWARD J. GALLAGHER"].
At this time Mr. BROWN acknowledged that the individual he feels to be D. B. COOPER was BRYANT COFFELT. He stated that COFFELT never showed them parachute buckles but in an off-handed manner indicated he had buried them in the area where he landed after parachuting from the plane. He said that COFFELT claimed after he landed he sprayed the parachute with some type of chemical, not described, which disintigrated the parachute. BROWN stated that he and [REDACTED] accompanied COFFELT to a point approximately 15 miles west of Dufur, Oregon to a place called Marion Point and that COFFELT claimed to have landed at a point which he pointed out about five miles in an easterly direction from Marion Point. He said COFFELT then pointed out a tall tree with a broken limb hanging down which he claimed to have hit and injured himself in landing. Mr. BROWN stated that he and [REDACTED] made a cursory look around this area but found no signs of anything being buried. He did note that there had been two impressions in the ground near the tree approximately a foot apart and skid marks which he felt could have been made by an individual in a parachute landing.
Mr. BROWN could offer no further information regarding this at this time.
