DIRECTOR, FBI (164-2111) (ATTENTION: FBI LABORATORY)

SAC, SAN FRANCISCO (164-220) (P)

NORJAK OO: SEATTLE

Reference Bureau airtel to San Francisco, dated 10/30/75, with copies to Seattle and Las Vegas.

Enclosed under separate cover is part of an orange and white parachute.

This part of the parachute was obtained on 11/4/75, by SA [REDACTED] San Francisco Division, from [REDACTED] [REDACTED] Napa, California, telephone [REDACTED] number [REDACTED]

For information of the Laboratory, [REDACTED] by letter to FBI Headquarters on 10/24/75, advised he was in possession of this parachute that he felt might possibly be connected with the hijacking-extortion matter which occurred in the captioned case on 11/24/71.

[REDACTED] SA [REDACTED] on 11/4/75, acknowledged receipt of [REDACTED] letter to the FBI Headquarters and obtained the parachute, securing possible Bureau interest.

It is realized that very little can be determined from examining this part of a parachute, inasmuch as it, apparently, has been in the mountains for some time and has been partially eaten by various rodents in the mountainous area. However, since it was obtained by [REDACTED] hidden under a log in very peculiar circumstances near Sardine Mountain, California, with an elevation of 7,575 feet, which is located out of Sierraville, California, located in a remote area between Sierraville, California, and Reno, Nevada, [REDACTED] noted

that the plane carrying the hijacker in instant case, traveling from Seattle to Reno, would have probably traveled over this area at 10,000 feet to avoid the Sardine Mountains.

[REDACTED] also stated he was formerly in the U. S. Forest Service as a smoke jumper in fire prevention and that this parachute is similar to the type the forest service used except a much smaller parachute.

[REDACTED] also speculated that in the point where he located the parachute, hidden under a log, was approximately one mile southwest of a 200 acre clear meadow and approximately one mile northeast of a 200 acre meadow in the Lemon Canyon area.

One copy of this letter is being disseminated to Las Vegas for their information in view of the referenced Bureau airtel.

The Bureau Laboratory is requested to examine this parachute in an attempt to determine the type of parachute it is and individuals who might use this type of parachute and coloring, such as the U. S. Forest Service. Will also attempt, if possible, to determine the age of the parachute or how long it has been in this remote area, concealed under a log. At the conclusion of whatever examination the Laboratory can make of this parachute, it should be returned to the San Francisco Division and results furnished to the Seattle and Las Vegas Offices.
