it has been ten years since i took the plunge from flight 305. i never planned on contact but the feeling is probably mutual. while i obviously did not overestimate my abilities, i have underestimated public reaction to the event. instead of a dim memory it seems that the mythmakers have been hard at work. first the cult following, then articles and books, and now a movie. none of which ever broke my silence. but now comes a million dollar reward! perhaps turning myslf in would be a wise and profitable decision. i propose that i give myself up if the following conditions are met: i must have assurances that my surrender will qualify for the reward; to that effect i want a joint legal opinion and agreement by the justice department and universal. i will return the money to northwest if they agree to refrain from all future legal proceedings against me. i will plead guilty to a one year punishable misdemeanor to be served at a minimum federal facility; to that effect i want an agreement signed by the attorney general. if this can be done in time i will surrender to the director of the fbi personally on november 24. act quickly, i believe this to be in everyones best interests, even universal; a million will be a small amount for the unlimited press coverage and curiosity. think it over. if you agree, place a notice in the new york times' personal column reading "come home d.b.,all is forgiven" on november [guess: 19th]. i will then recontact over specifics. p.s. i would like to offer belated thanks to captain scott and [illegible] for their good conduct at the time.

sincerely not yours, d.b. cooper
