Re SUairtel 6/27/73.

Enclosed for the Bureau are four copies and for Seattle one copy each of two newspaper articles regarding D. B. COOPER and RICHARD FLOYD MC COY, JR.

On 1/23/86 the DESERET NEWS, page B1 of the Salt Lake City, Utah, edition, printed an article which states that BERNIE D. RHODES, a retired Chief Probation Officer, has filed a Freedom of Information Act request before the Federal court to force the FBI to turn over documents regarding MC COY. MC COY was convicted in Federal court in April of 1972 for hijacking a United Airlines Boeing 727 jetliner. MC COY was sentenced to 45 years in prison but escaped in August, 1974. He was shot and killed in a shoot-out with FBI Agents 11/9/74 in Virginia. On 1/24/86 the Salt Lake Tribune, page B-7, ran a similar story.

It is noted that [REDACTED] was the [REDACTED] [REDACTED] who was involved in the MC COY case and is currently in the process of writing a book claiming that MC COY was in fact D. B. COOPER.

On 1/24/86, [REDACTED] Salt Lake County SO, retired FBI Supervisor who was the case Agent on the MC COY case, contacted the Salt Lake City Office and advised that he could not believe that [REDACTED] was writing a book or seriously believed that MC COY was D. B. COOPER. [REDACTED] believed that [REDACTED] was motivated only by the profit. He stated that extensive investigation had been done regarding MC COY, including personal discussions between [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] a case Agent in the D. B. COOPER case, and that there was no way MC COY was identical with COOPER.

On 1/24/86 [REDACTED] RICHARD FLOYD MC COY, JR., contacted the Salt Lake Office of the FBI and was quite upset that the entire issue regarding [REDACTED] background had been brought up by the newspaper, and specifically [REDACTED] She stated it was a dark period in her life and she had hoped to put it behind her family. She stated that [REDACTED] [REDACTED] would not even attend school since the article appeared. She stated it was her opinion that in no way was [REDACTED] identical to D. B. COOPER and that although the paper stated that [REDACTED] had had conversations with her, she could not recall speaking with him at all. However, she did state that she did talk to a probation officer during the presentence report on [REDACTED] and that if that individual was [REDACTED] she would have spoken with him at that time. She added if any of that information appeared in any book she believed that would be an ethical violation of [REDACTED] position, if not against the law. She stated that [REDACTED] had literally hounded her by phoning and coming to her residence to the point where she is considering legal action to keep him away.
