NEW JERSEY Bail set at $5 million for suspect in family slaying
A judge in Elizabeth set bail at $5 million yesterday for a man authorities say is John Emil List, who pleaded innocent to murder- ing his wife, three children and mother almost 18 years ago. The suspect maintains he is Robert P. Clark, although federal officials say they have positively identified him through finger- prints taken when List served in the military. List disappeared in November 1971. A few weeks later, police found the bodies of his wife, Helen; three teen-age children, Patricia, Frederick and John; and mother, Alma, in the family home.
