The following investigation was conducted by SA [REDACTED]

On August 18, 1989, [REDACTED] [REDACTED] San Antonio, Texas, date of birth [REDACTED] telephone number [REDACTED] was contacted at his place of residence. [REDACTED] stated that he was a former member of the United States Air Force and was stationed at McCord Air Force Base (AFB) at Tacoma, Washington from [REDACTED]

---

According to [REDACTED] there is a "Transient Quarters" area at McCord AFB where military personnel are stationed on a temporary basis while awaiting transfer to another location. In [REDACTED] many of the servicemen assigned to the Transient Quarters were members of the 82nd Airborne, United States Army. [REDACTED] advised that on one occasion he was eating in the Transient Quarters chow hall and was sitting at a table with 8-10 82nd Airborne soldiers. During conversation at the table, several of the soldiers were discussing ways to make money. Some of the ways suggested by members of the group were bank robbery and the robbing of a jewelry store.

[REDACTED] stated that he gave a suggestion of his own to the group, that of hijacking. [REDACTED] explained to the group that many west coast flights carried passengers who travelled with much jewelry and money, and that people of their training would have no difficulty pulling it off. [REDACTED] stated that he was not serious when he suggested this to the group. As best as [REDACTED] can recall, this conversation took place between December, [REDACTED] and May, [REDACTED]

---

[REDACTED] advised that at the time the 82nd Airborne was making many jumps into the forests and deserted areas of Washington state. [REDACTED] believes that the jump by the so called "D.B. COOPER," would have been easy for a 82nd Airborne soldier and that such a person would be very familiar with the forest of Washington.

---

[REDACTED] stated that he was attending school in San Antonio when the "D.B. COOPER" hijacking took place and that he did not give it much though at the time.

[REDACTED] could not recall the names of any of the soldiers who took part in the above conversation, but stated that they ranged in rank from E-5 (Sergeant) to E-7 (Gunnery Sergeant). [REDACTED] recalled the name of a 82nd Airborne soldier who "hung around" that group, [REDACTED] but he was not at the table with the others.

[REDACTED] was released from active duty on January, [REDACTED] and subsequently moved to San Antonio where he now resides.
