2 Plead Innocent to Bilking Magazi for $30,000
SEATTLE, Wash. (UPI)— Two men accused of trying to bilk a magazine editor by sell- ing him a fake interview with parachuting hijacker "D.B. Cooper" for $30,000 pleaded in- nocent Monday. Trial was set for Nov. 27.
William J. Lewis, 33, and Donald S. Murphy, 49, both from the Bremerton, Wash., area, faced federal charges of conspiring to defraud Karl P. Fleming, a former contributing editor of Newsweek magazine. Each has posted bail.
The charges state that Lewis, using the name "Seth Thomas," responded to newspaper adver- tisements placed by Fleming who said he wanted to contact "Cooper" for a confidential in- terview.
"D.B. Cooper" was the name given by the man who hijacked a Northwest Airlines jetliner last Thanksgiving eve and ex- torted $200,000 in marked cur- rency. The hijacker then para- chuted from the plane on a rainy night after ordering the pilot to fly from Seattle to Reno, Nev.
"Cooper" and the $200,000 have been missing ever since. He is the only parachuting sky- jacker who has not been caught.
According to the charges, Lewis introduced Murphy as "Cooper" to Fleming last Feb. 23 and Murphy, wearing a dis- guise to match filmed interview and produced $20 bills on which serial numbers said to be those on bills given to the hijacker had been superimposed.
