RE: JAMES BRYANT COFFELT, aka Jack Bryant Coffelt, Bryant Arthur James Coffelt (TN) [REDACTED]

---

Re Seattle airtel to Bureau dated 8/17/77.

As Seattle is well aware, Agents of the Los Angeles Division have interviewed [REDACTED] on several occasions. During the initial contact, he indicated that he had retained an ex-FBI Agent to assist him [REDACTED] of COFFELT, but refused to identify this individual. During a later contact on 5/6/77, he identified [REDACTED] [REDACTED] a retired FBI Agent from Newport Beach, California. Subsequent efforts to identify [REDACTED] in Orange County and Los Angeles, California, met with negative results.

[REDACTED] is a name-dropper, has a wild imagination, and is frequently loose with the truth. It is the opinion of the interviewing agents that the only official information [REDACTED] has concerning this matter is an FBI identification record relating to COFFELT, which he may have obtained from [REDACTED] [REDACTED] if he does, in fact, have one.

Unless advised to the contrary by Seattle, Los Angeles is conducting no additional investigation to identify [REDACTED]. It is believed by Los Angeles that even if [REDACTED] is identified, chances of him cooperating would be unlikely and [REDACTED] would be immediately advised. Los Angeles further feels that [REDACTED] would then claim even more strongly that COFFELT is D. B. COOPER and that the FBI is attempting to stop his investigation because the Bureau would be embarrassed if the case was solved by him.

ARMED AND DANGEROUS.
