Discovered 'Cooper' bills only $5,000, says F.B.I.

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- (AP) -- The crumbling remains of $20 bills unearthed by a Vancouver family more than two weeks ago represents about $5,000 of the $200,000 taken in the 1971 D.B. Cooper skyjacking, the Federal Bureau of Investigation says.

Ray Mathis, senior agent, said officials counted the decaying greenbacks during F.B.I. laboratory tests in Washington, D.C.

Otis Cox of the bureau's Washington, D.C., office said little else has been revealed about the money. Lab technicians continue to study the loot, particularly for evidence of where it might have been before it washed up on the banks of the Columbia River, Otis said.

The lumpy wads of money were found buried in shallow sand west of here.

The fate of Cooper, America's first sky- jacker-for-money, has never been learned, al- though the F.B.I. maintains he is probably long dead.
