Dear Sir,
[REDACTED] up in the [guess: hills] mentions about twenty miles west of Reno, Nevada when I [guess: saw] something [guess: or was] [guess: tucked] [guess: up] under a log, I [guess: reached] in and pulled out a section of a para- chute (actually [guess: seven] sections) that had been rolled up into a tight ball and [guess: hidden]. [guess: There], I don't know any thing about parachutes but I will describe it the best that I can. It was twisted [guess: from] end to end [guess: just] like someone had tied to [illegible] wring it out and then they [guess: rolled] it [guess: up in] a ball and hid it. [guess: I wonder] that log, and [illegible] [illegible] [guess: or] [guess: caved] or just rot [guess: have] eating off

The outside layers of cloth and just left the ropes that [guess: separate] each panel and the band that goes around the bottom and the three inside sections of cloth, are still intact.
He looked around at the trees in the vicinity and found that a ponderosa pine tree about thirty feet up the hill from the chute had something heavy fall through it, breaking off a [guess: row] of [guess: branches] [guess: on] to the bottom. Whatever had come down through that tree had taken an awful beating. Now it started to make sense why that was just half of a chute we found. Who ever was in it was left dangling about fifteen feet from the ground because all the small dead limbs had been crushed as if a heavy load had been swung

against the side of the tree. Then they climbed the shroud lines and cut off the inside shroud lines and the hem on the bottom of the [guess: bottom] of the chute on each side and let the nylon [guess: panel] on each side split to the top so that it doubled the length of the chute so they could reach the ground, and then he took [guess: the] end of the chute [guess: and] on the ground and twisted it into rope so he could snap it loose from the limb it was hooked onto. Then when he got it down, he cut the top seam and the ropes at the cone, separating the two halves and hid this half we found and took the other half with him for a shelter. He also took all the shroud lines from the part he left and the

[guess: harness].
The only person we can think of that would go to this much trouble to hide his track so carefully was that Cooper that hijacked that plane in Seattle [guess: Washington] a few years ago, and this place is directly on the route that plane went. This is seven thousand feet elevation and bitterly cold that time of year and ten rough miles to the nearest habitation and if he was badly injured, I doubt if he made it out.
As soon as we got home I called your office in San Francisco and the young fellow that answered wasn't interested. He said you know that Cooper jumped out in Oregon and he doubts that he could have [guess: hiked] five hundred miles before he hit

I said that is the last time I try to help you people with any thing but now it seems that every one in town knows about it and are all going on a two hundred thousand dollar hunt and when I got home from work one guy had [guess: driven] from a church from the [guess: chute] for a souvenir, so I've decided to write you and let you know the whole thing before some one gets hurt in those mountains. If you are interested please let me know and I will keep the rest of the [guess: chute] intact and I wont tell anyone the exact location I found it. Sincerely [REDACTED]
