The following investigation was conducted by SA [REDACTED].
AT EUGENE, OREGON
On March 14, 1972, [REDACTED], telephone number [REDACTED], Eugene, Oregon, advised that he has been acquainted with MERLIN GENE COOPER for approximately [REDACTED] years. [REDACTED] stated that COOPER has worked for him in the past and in his opinion COOPER is a "no account bumb, who has never held a job for any length of time in his life." [REDACTED] advised that when COOPER is in the Eugene, Oregon, area he usually stops by and visits with [REDACTED]. [REDACTED] further stated that he last saw COOPER approximately [REDACTED] and was very surprised at the change in COOPER. [REDACTED] stated that COOPER has spent most of his life working in low paying, laboring type jobs and spends just about everything he makes drinking and running around town. When COOPER arrived at [REDACTED], approximately [REDACTED], he was driving a new Oldsmobile Toronado, car and had a great deal of money in his possession. When [REDACTED] commented on how well COOPER seemed to be doing COOPER said that his grandmother had died recently and left him a great deal of money. COOPER also told [REDACTED] that he has recently purchased in conjunction with another individual a large farm near Prineville, Oregon, and this is where he is residing. [REDACTED] continued to make inquiries concerning the source of COOPER's funds, but COOPER would not comment any further than saying that his grandmother had died and left him the money. [REDACTED] stated that he has not seen a great deal of COOPER in the past six months and could not accurately comment on his whereabouts during November of 1971. [REDACTED] did state, however, that he knew that COOPER had been in a hospital in Walla Walla, Washington during December of 1971, but he did not know the nature of COOPER's illness.
