Cavalry called into hunt for hijacker Cooper
An intensive search connected with the Nov. 24 disappearance of a skyjacker-parachutist identified as Dan Cooper is being carried out from the Merwin Dam area southeast of Kelso, Wash., by Army troops from Ft. Lewis, Wash., and FBI agents.
Portland and Seattle FBI offices refused to confirm or deny the intent of the search, and would not say whether they had new information on Cooper and the $200,000 he took with him.
Merwin Dam area residents said agents are housed in Kelso and Longview, Wash., and that the troops are from the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, at Ft. Lewis.
The troops appeared Monday. Area residents said they were told Merwin Park would be blocked off for the rest of the week.
Residents said a pass was required to enter the park, which is in the area where the skyjacker is presumed to have vanished, taking $200,000 in ransom money with him.
The Northwest Airlines 727 jet was commandeered between Portland and Seattle last November. The skyjacker picked up the money and two parachutes in Seattle, and is believed to have bailed out of the jet over Southwest Washington in the area now being searched.
A long search after the incident turned up nothing.
Some 200 troops and an unspecified number of helicopters are in the area, a Ft. Lewis spokesman said.
The troops are headquartered at Camp Bonneville, 15 miles northeast of Vancouver. The helicopters are operating from Merwin Park.
Residents in the area said FBI agents had been coming around asking for permission to search the premises and land for "a satchel, brief case, parachute and person of Dan Cooper."
Outbuildings have been searched, but apparently the search of wooded areas is just getting under way. The first contingent of FBI men was on the scene at least as early as Saturday.
An Oregonian reporter found the entrance to Merwin Park guarded by the FBI Tuesday night, and was refused admittance. He was able to discern at least nine helicopters parked there.
