A person reads every report. Corrections are made by hand, to the data — titles, dates, names, which pages belong together — never to the scans, and they can take a while to appear.

FBI Portland Oct 16, 1972 D.B. Cooper case 164-41 Sirs In the early hubbub over the D.B. Cooper case I hesitated to contact your office, (though the composite photo of Mr. Cooper seemed [guess: familiar],) and I yet have no reason to believe my [guess: letter] would be helpful. Still, I will advance a couple comments. (I grew up at [REDACTED] [REDACTED]) My first impressions were, (1.) that such a jump as occurred would be imposs- ible to make successfully. (2.) That the many access roads to the Bonneville Power line might have been used in combination with an automatic or manually operated Beacon light. Commercial Airline travel crosses [guess: back] [guess: wood] Canyon roughly parallel to the power line in its flight headed South. A mean average point would place a given Airline roughly overhead at the Eastern slope of Look wood Hill, although they sometimes track directly over the Power line at that point.) (3.) An individual in that area could easily elude detection, even in daylight with searchers about. He could, in fact make it all the way to Interstate 5 to the west, could boat to Eddy [guess: sock] via the East Fork of the Lewis River, reach a parked car on the highway leave from any of [guess: unnumbered] [guess:ble] power line roads or even boat the Lewis and cross the Columbia at St Helens Oregon. Etc.

(4) The possibility of a "smoke jumper" making such a jump, successfully seems more logical than for a sports parachutist to do so.
(5) I believe this man cooper made it down safely, somehow, lucking out to a degree
(6) A mystery is something to be solved. I simply can't accept an unsolved crime as unsolvable.
(7) I don't believe in Robin Hoods either. This man was, and is, a criminal, careless of others lives. The daring jump was impressive; nothing much else about him is impressive.
(8) Since the start of this the town named Hotkinson has stuck in my mind, in relation to a parachute jump. (I cannot for the life of me remember where this town even is, yet it was a town involved in [guess: Los Alaportos].)
(9) There is just a faint possibility that this man cooper is a local citizen whom I have known casually. The picture was so striking as a familiar face, but then composites [guess: Class] composites look familiar to everybody.
If my [guess: familiarity] with the [REDACTED] [REDACTED] would be of any assistance - from here - feel free to let me know. Yours Tru[REDACTED]
