The Portland Division of the FBI had developed infor- mation that [REDACTED] had rented a 1971 Cougar on October 19, 1971 for a period of 1 month. He did not return the vehicle until February 14, 1972 and had accumulated only [REDACTED] [REDACTED] on the vehicle.

---

At Bethel, Alaska

On February 27, 1974, [REDACTED] furnished the following information to SA [REDACTED]

As was his habit, when the construction season ended, [REDACTED] flew from Alaska to Portland, Oregon in the Fall of 1971, to visit [REDACTED]. He recalls that he rented a Cougar automobile in Portland, Oregon and caused quite a bit of consternation on the part of the rental company because he did not return the vehicle until mid-February, 1972. [REDACTED] explained that he did not realize he was causing the trouble by keeping the car for an extended period of time and would not have done so had he realized this. Concerning credit cards, [REDACTED] stated he did not utilize them and has no recollection of utilizing a credit card at the time he rented the Cougar. After obtaining the vehicle, [REDACTED] made at least 5 trips between Portland and Coquille, Oregon, which is where [REDACTED]. He stated that the one way distance between these 2 points is [REDACTED] and feels that during the approximately 4 months that he had the Cougar, he must have put between [REDACTED] miles on the vehicle. After visiting Coquille, he would travel back to Portland, where [REDACTED] telephone [REDACTED].

---

[REDACTED] could not explain why Hertz Rent-A-Car records would show that he only had [REDACTED] on the vehicle, as he did not turn the speedometer back or disconnect it at any time while it was in his possession. He feels that he was charged for the use of many more miles than [REDACTED].

---

Concerning his source of money while visiting in Oregon on this occasion, [REDACTED] displayed his savings account passbook at the St. Johns Branch, Security Bank of Oregon, 7410 North Chicago Avenue, Portland, Oregon, account number [REDACTED] [REDACTED] This account had been opened on February 23, 1972,

with an initial deposit [REDACTED] Between March 10 and 16, 1972, [REDACTED]. He explained that the source of this money was from his personal checking account, which he had closed out at the First National Bank of Anchorage, Bethel Branch. He still has this savings account at the St. Johns Branch.

---

[REDACTED] displayed his checking account record with the First National Bank of Anchorage, which indicated that the account contained as high as [REDACTED] at one time prior to 1972, and contained in excess of [REDACTED] when it was closed out in 1972.

---

[REDACTED] explained he closed his checking account and deposited the money in the savings bank in Oregon as it was impossible for him to write checks on a Bethel, Alaska bank while he was visiting in Portland.

---

[REDACTED] recalls that he was living in Portland at the time of the hijacking of an aircraft by "D.B. COOPER". He recalls reading the newspaper articles of the hijacking, but denied that he has any personal knowledge of this matter.
