Ship Hits Tacoma Bridge
TACOMA — (AP) — A Japanese freighter loaded with logs veered out of control yesterday while being assisted by tugs through the Hylebos Waterway, seriously damaging a drawbridge and closing a state highway. Marion Smith, acting Highway Department district engineer, estimated to $1 million and the high-way 509 bridge would be closed at least two months while repairs are made. He said temporary repairs were made to allow the waterway to be used by ships between the Tacoma industrial area and Puget Sound. Immediately after the collision, the freighter Syuko Maru was moored in the waterway, a 30-foot gash in her side. Officials said there was no danger to the ship. Smith said the vessel was being towed toward Commencement Bay when it suddenly veered and struck the bridge. He said it appeared there was some trouble with the ship's steering mechanism. Smith said highway engineers would meet tomorrow to more accurately assess the damage. But he said preliminary estimates indicated the bridge may take more than two months to repair, and that it may have to be reconstructed. Highway department officials said the question of payment for the damage "will have to b[e] thrashed out," between the state, the shipping company and insurance companies involved.
