Re: Sub. #611.

Re Portland letter to Anchorage, 8/6/73.

On 8/29/73, [REDACTED] were located and interviewed at their residence in Seward, Alaska. They stated that they were [REDACTED] Lakeside Motel in Woodland, Washington. They recalled that approximately two weeks prior to the subject hijacking, a man checked into Unit 7 at the Lakeside Motel. This man had a late model Ford pickup truck and claimed to be employed by a construction firm working on the dykes on the Columbia River near Woodland, Washington. The man stayed in Unit 7 at the motel until a day or two prior to the hijacking when he left. They recall that he was gone for approximately two weeks and then returned to Unit 7. [REDACTED] recalls that during the time that he was gone she made a telephone call to a telephone number that he had left on his registration card and she determined that he was staying in a rooming house, location unknown to [REDACTED] and that she was able to contact him at the number left with the Lakeside Motel and found that he was ill but was intending to return to Woodland, Washington.

---

[REDACTED] recall that when they went into Unit 7 to clean the room, they noted that the individual had three handy walkie-talkie type radios in the room. He had a large wardrobe of sport type clothing and they felt he was not the usual type construction worker because of his vocabulary and manner. They also recalled that he always paid his motel bill with $100 bills.

---

[REDACTED] stated that a short time after the individual returned to the Lakeside Motel after his stated illness, he checked out and never returned.
