Sadistic Rapist Attacks Napa Woman

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A nationwide descrip- tion has been issued of a man without a navel who police believe raped, beat, stabbed and shot a Napa woman in a hotel here, offi- cials said. "It's one of the more perverse and sadistic inci- dents we've had," Inspector Chris Sullivan said Wednes- day. "It was definitely set up. He already had a chain, handcuffs and tape in the room when he brought her there."

Victim 'Mutilated' The woman, 25, is hospi- talized in stable condition. Sullivan said she was muti- lated, "her buttocks beaten

raw" and a bullet creased her forehead. He said she told police she accepted a shared cab ride with a man. She said when they arrived near his hotel he shoved a gun into her side and forced her to accompany him. The woman was assault- ed for a 22-hour period on the 19th floor of the Holi- day Inn on Kearny St., Sul- livan said.

Left Nude, Bound The woman told police the man left Wednesday morning, saying he had to catch an airline flight. She later managed to reach the hallway, nude and still bound, where she was dis-

covered by a chambermaid, Sullivan said. He said the assailant had registered under the name Henry H. Cooper of Reno, Nev. "He spoke with a west- ern twang, dressed in ex- pensive western clothes and c[ow]boy boots and was loaded with $100 bills. "But the most unusual thing about him was that he didn't have a belly button," Sullivan added. "It's not im- possible, I understand, if he had surgery for a hernia as a youngster."
