In March, 1981, U.S. Senator Allen Cranston received a letter dated [REDACTED] from [REDACTED] Pacoima, California, who, in essence, were pleading for assistance in locating their only son, [REDACTED] who last corresponded with them from Viet Nam in [REDACTED] while he was serving in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps.

[REDACTED] through inquiries of [REDACTED] [REDACTED] in Fort Lewis, Washington, in 1972, determined [REDACTED] was discharged from the Fort Lewis Army Camp on [REDACTED] with a considerable amount of money and that he had never reached his forwarding address provided by him upon his departure.

Since [REDACTED] discharge, his parents, friends, and former associates have never received any correspondence nor have they, through exhaustive investigations by private detective agencies and assistance from other government agencies, been able to determine his whereabouts for the last ten years.

Senator Cranston furnished a copy of the [REDACTED] letter to the San Francisco Office requesting assistance, conveying the subject's parents' speculation that their son may have met with foul play following his discharge from the Army and that someone, other than their son, was using his Social Security card obtaining employment in the U.S. since 1971. Senator Cranston requested the San Francisco Division to attempt to determine if [REDACTED] was dead or alive.

In May, 1981, San Francisco received a copy of [REDACTED] [REDACTED] U.S. Army fingerprint card and his FBI criminal history record of identification. A copy of these documents have been enclosed should the Seattle Office desire the Identification Division, Fingerprint Section, to conduct a comparison against any latent fingerprints of unknown subject, aka D.B. Cooper.

San Francisco initiated a preliminary investigation resulting in the determination that a [REDACTED] Social Security Account number [REDACTED] was known to have been employed with the [REDACTED] San Francisco, California, during the year of 1979.

Contact with officials of this organization determined that a [REDACTED] found to be identical, did in fact reside at the [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] during the period of 2/23/78 until 8/17/79.
