Five riders find bag, bones near Proebstel
Bones, a black and red bag and a torn $1 bill were found by five persons riding horses on Green Moun- tain Tuesday.
The bones included rib and spinal bones, but no skull. The Proebstel- area couple who reported the find to the Clark County Sheriff's Office could not tell if the bones were that of a human. Deputies were being led to the spot on horseback today.
The bag was found about 100 yards from the bones, one of the riders said. Something was written on it, but she did not remember what.
She found the $1 bill, torn in four equal pieces, shortly before coming on the bones, she said.
Three other persons were on the ride when the bones were spotted in the Proebstel area near Green Moun- tain, about 10 miles east of Van- couver.
Another rider said the bag looked like an airline bag. It had the name of an airline written on it, but he could not recall which, he said.
The possibility was raised that the bones could be those of the elusive "D.B. Cooper," who hijacked a North- west Orient Airlines jet in Seattle Nov. 24, 1971. He parachuted out with $200,000 somewhere over Southwest Washington. He carried a small briefcase or attache case.
The money consisted of 10,000 $20 bills wrapped in a parachute canopy.
The Vancouver FBI agent in charge, John Gordon, said the skimpy information was not enough for him to tell whether his agency is interest- ed in the bones. He said he was keeping in touch with the sheriff's office regarding the case and would wait to see what else deputies turned up today.
