[...] rights en[illegible] [...] had merely sought to "fine-tune" it. Said Washington civil rights lawyer William Coleman caustically: "The attorney general hasn't read the cases if he says that." "There's a hell of a lot to be done, and it's shocking that the people in power don't realize that and move at a much faster pace," said Coleman, who helped prepare the case that led

From page 1A Stoner, 65, was convicted in a 1977 trial publicized throughout the nation for the 1958 bombing of the black Bethel Baptist Church in Birmingham, Ala. — a focal point of the civil rights movement. The church was unoccupied at the time. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison and served 3½ years before his release in 1986. "We advocate the repeal of all the civil rights laws ... " Stoner said of his Marietta, Ga.-based organization, known as the Crusade against Corruption. "White people are the suppressed people in this country and not the so-called minorities." Stoner, who was a Georgia gubernatorial candidate in 1970, and ran for U.S. Senate in Georgia in 1980 on a platform of shipping blacks to Africa and confiscating all ill-gotten Jewish wealth, said he wasn't currently a member of the KKK, but had been asked to come and speak. Unlike Reagan and his attorneys general, Bush and Thornburgh have opened their doors to civil rights leaders and listened to their complaints and proposals. Bush has asked for more money for black colleges and universities, as well as Head Start and adult literacy programs, and he supports legislation to extend civil rights guarantees to 36 million handicapped Americans.
White Knights — an offshoot of the KKK — at 5595 Haverhill Road Extension in Lantana. On Friday, Stoner was accompanied by a man who identified himself as a member of the KKK. A West Palm Beach police officer kept an eye on the activity from his car. The Klan's announcement that it would burn a 50-foot cross west of Lantana has drawn sharp criticism from community groups, some which will hold their own rallies. About 300 people are expected to attend an interracial unity and solidarity demonstration at Jose Marti Park in West Palm Beach — about a mile down the road from where Stoner spoke Friday — that's been organized by SHARP (Stop Hatred and Racism in the Palm Beaches). The group hopes to draw support from across the state to speak out against violence and hatred. The demonstration starts at 5 p.m. Also, a sunset unity prayer and candlelight ceremony is scheduled for tonight at the Boynton Beach Civic Center at [...]

[...] flag [illegible] is too sacred to be abused," Bush said at the Iwo Jima Memorial, which immortalizes the World War II photograph of Marines hoisting the Stars and Stripes on the Pacific island after they captured it from the Japanese. The memorial is across the Potomac River from Washington. "I am confident that we will succeed," Bush said of the campaign to amend the Constitution for the first time since 1971, when 18-year-olds were granted the right to vote. "I've seen predictions that this will take a long time. It need not." The proposed amendment would nullify last week's Supreme Court ruling that flag- burning is protected under the First Amendment right to free expression. If approved, it would be the first amendment to the Bill of Rights. The amendment is being sponsored in the Senate by Republican Leader Robert Dole of Kansas and Democrat Alan Dixon of Illinois, and in the House by GOP leader Robert Michel of Illinois and Democratic Rep. G.V. "Sonny" Montgomery of Mississippi. The sponsors joined Bush at Friday's ceremony, beneath the flag fluttering on atop the statue. More flags flanked the memorial, and many in the audience waved tiny flags.
