Update

Is he D.B. Cooper? Not likely

John List, 64, stands accused of murdering his mother, wife and three teen-aged children in New Jersey but he probably is not D.B. Cooper, the legendary Northwest' airplane hijacker, a New Jersey official said yesterday.

"We believe he was in Denver at the time of the hijacking," said Capt. Frank Marranca of the Union County, N.J., prosecutor's office.

- The hijacking of a Northwest Airlines jet and Cooper's escape by parachute with $200,000 in ransom took place on Nov. 24, 1971. List disappeared Nov. 9, 1971, and the bodies of his family members were found a month later.

Cooper has never been found although some money from the hijacking was found in February of 1980 along the banks of the Columbia River. The FBI believes Cooper may have died in the parachute jump into rough country.

List was arrested June 1 in Virginia, after eluding authorities for 18 years.
