Two Kitsap Men Face Cooper Fraud Charges

By DENISE KALETTE and OREN CAMPBELL Of The Sun Staff

Two Kitsap County men today were charged by the federal government with a plot to impersonate skyjacker "D. B. Cooper" in order to extort more than $30,000 from a Los Angeles writer.

According to U. S. Atty. Gen. Stan Pitkin, the FBI arrested William "Jack" Lewis, 32-year-old land develop- er from Seabeck, and Donald Sylvester Murphy, 49, a Bremerton real estate promoter, after a complaint was signed today by a U. S. magistrate in Seattle.

Lewis and Murphy are charged with conspiring to defraud Karl Fleming of Los Angeles, former Newsweek contribut[guess: ing] editor, in return for an exclusive story from "Coop[guess: er]" on how the hijacking was carried out.

It is a federal crime to induce a person to cross state lines in furtherance of a fraud.

Lewis was arrested at his home at Sea-Vue Estates near Seabeck, while Murphy, a resident of Higgs House,
