Ransom Skyjacking
Three recent ventures into air- craft hijacking for ransom have come off badly for the air pirates: One parachuted into the arms of captors in Colorado. Another was killed in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and a third was wounded and captured at New York's Kennedy International Air- port.
The disastrous outcome of these misadventures, together with the new search rules initiated Monday, may deter other attempts. We hope so. There is nothing glamorous about such harebrained schemes. They threaten scores of lives and some day, if continued, will end in tragedy.
When one, "D.B. Cooper" hi- jacked a Northwest Orient 727 jet last November and parachuted safe- ly out with $200,000 loot, some pub- lic utterances were heard expressing a sort of admiration for "Cooper's" crime. Nothing is more likely to en- courage one of unsettled mind to try the same thing than to make heroes out of those who do under- take it successfully.
Skyjackers, whether for ransom or for flight to another country, are thieves, extortionists and potential mass murderers. If they are heroes, then what's a criminal?
