Hijack-Hoaxer Pays Back lota of Booty
SEATTLE (AP) — A Bre- merton man who posed as sky- jacker "D. B. Cooper" in an at- tempt to extort $45,000 from a newsman has paid back $4,500 according to his lawyer.
A hoax Cooper interview re- portedly was being considered for the cover of Newsweek magazine before the authorities uncovered the scheme. Donald Sylvester Murphy later was convicted on a federal extortion charge.
Murphy's attorney, Tony Sav- age, says Murphy got only $9,- 000 from Karl Flemming, for- mer Newsweek bureau chief in Los Angeles.
And Murphy believes he can raise the balance of the money he got from Flemming. Savage has told U.S. District Court Judge Walter McGovern. Sav- age says the major share of the extortion money went to Wil- liam Lewis, Bremerton, and an- other man who wasn't charged in the case.
Lewis was sentenced to three years and Murphy two. A fed- eral appeals court Friday up- held Murphy's conviction. Judge McGovern, however, has postponed Murphy's departure for McNeil Island Federal Penitentiary for two months.
