Parachute, Skull Found Near Hijack Jump Area
PORTLAND, Ore. (UPI) — A skull found near a weathered parachute in Mt. Hood National Forest is the newest clue in the three- year search for the in- famous skyjacker "D.B. Cooper." A man calling himself by that name parachuted from a low-flying jetliner on Thanksgiving eve, 1971, with $200,000 in ransom money strapped to his chest. Neither he nor the money was ever seen again. South of the suspected jump area authorities Thursday found the skull believed to be that of a person in his early 30s. A parachute was in a nearby tree at the site 10 miles east of Estacada, Ore. Dr. Larry Lewman of the state medical examiner's office said Friday. "That naturally led us to wonder whether the skull might be Cooper's," Lewman said. An FBI spokesman said he doubted the man who hijack- ed a Boeing 727 on a flight from Portland to Seattle, Wash., could have landed where the skull was found. He said the flight pattern and winds on the night of the hijack "seem to rule out" the location. Earlier FBI investigations turned up parachute harnesses and skulls in the suspected jump area. None has helped agents find Cooper or the missing $200,000. Lewman said he put the FBI onto the skull after he heard [illegible] parachute.
