Two sentenced for fake story on Dan Cooper

SEATTLE (AP) — Two Bremerton-area men were sentenced to prison terms ranging to 12 years Friday on convictions of selling a fake "Dan Cooper" inter- view to a Los Angeles jour- nalist.

U.S. District Court Judge Walter T. McGovern sen- tenced William "Jack" Lew- is, 33, of Seabeck, to three- year terms on each of four fraud convictions. The terms will run concurrently.

Donald S. Murphy, 50, of Silverdale, was sentenced to two-year terms on each of three counts. His terms also will be served concurrently.

The pair was convicted last month on fraud charges stemming from their sale to a former Newsweek contrib- uting editor, Karl Fleming of Los Angeles, of a fake inter- view with the man who hi- jacked a Northwest Airlines jetliner over the Northwest on Thanksgiving Eve, 1971, then parachuted from the plane with a ransom. The man, who gave his name as Dan Cooper, never was found.

Lewis and Murphy were released on their personal recognizance, provided they surrender in 10 days to begin their sentences.
