A person reads every report. Corrections are made by hand, to the data — titles, dates, names, which pages belong together — never to the scans, and they can take a while to appear.

RE: JOHN RICHARD MERIT Sub No. 811
Re Seattle letter to Los Angeles dated 6/10/76, Los Angeles airtel to New Orleans 6/25/76, and New Orleans airtel to Los Angeles, 7/6/76.
Enclosed for Seattle [handwritten insert: 164-81-1a554] per request of referenced letter dated 6/10/76, are three photographs of JOHN RICHARD MERIT. Two of the photographs depict MERIT in a hospital bed with wounds incurred during a gun battle with police in New Orleans, Louisiana, on 12/3/71, about ten days after the hijacking in this matter.
On 7/16/76, [redacted], Long Beach, California, advised that he is currently [redacted] JOHN RICHARD MERIT. He stated that [redacted] maintains contact with MERIT's mother, Mrs. AGNAS CAUSEY MERIT, of Long Beach and through this contact he hears some information concerning MERIT.

[REDACTED] advised that Mrs. MERIT has told [REDACTED] that she sends part of her Social Security payments to her son, who is in prison in Louisiana. He stated he knows Mrs. MERIT just barely gets by financially, and there is no indication that she has access to any money.
[REDACTED] expressed his complete willingness to cooperate with the FBI in this matter and stated he would remain alert to any information which would indicate MERIT should be considered a suspect. He stated he would immediately notify the Los Angeles Office of any information coming to his attention through [REDACTED] contact with MERIT's mother.
---
It is noted that several attempts to interview MERIT's mother in 1971 at Long Beach were met with a very uncooperative attitude. In view of this attitude and [REDACTED] willingness to cooperate, no attempt is being made to interview AGNAS MERIT at this time.
---
It is suggested the enclosed photographs of MERIT be utilized by the Seattle Division to evaluate MERIT as a possible suspect.
---
The setting forth of additional leads will be left to the discretion of Seattle, it being noted that MERIT was apparently dating one [REDACTED] year-old white female in Birmingham, Alabama, during October and early November 1971, and was in Birmingham prior to Thanksgiving Day 1971, "maybe as much as two weeks prior to Thanksgiving." He also reportedly borrowed a car from one [REDACTED] in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on 11/29/71.

ARMED AND DANGEROUS.
