TEXT: Too-putting while wondering what ever happened to Bob Impaglia...

It isn't often that the sport of the privileged becomes the province of the underprivileged. But just such a serendipitous meeting will occur Nov. 12 at Doral Resort and Country Club when the Pompano Beach-based charity Food for the Poor holds its benefit golf tournament.

This will not be just another charity tournament. Food for the Poor is one of the largest providers of charity goods and services to the island of Haiti. Because of the current U.N. naval embargo of that island, Food for the Poor is one of the few remaining lifelines for the impoverished residents of Port-Au-Prince and the outlying regions of Haiti.

"Food, medicine and medical supplies are exempt from the embargo. Money raised by the tournament will go toward purchasing those and other materials that can be shipped into Haiti after clearance from the State Department.

Ordinarily, we steer clear of endorsing charity events, but, given the current state of affairs in Haiti, this one is worthy of support. Ferdie Nahfood, founder and director of the relief organization, sees to it that any money raised by Food for the Poor finds its way into the hands of the people who need it. In the coming months, the people in Haiti will be needing more help than ever.
