FBI Still After D. B. Cooper; Army Helps in Newest Search
LAKE MERWIN, Wash. (UPI) — It appears the FBI hasn't given up the search for the parachuting hijacker D. B. Cooper — in fact they've launched a new search with an undetermined amount of Army personnel.
A Portland television station (KATU-TV) reported an Army guard was turning away cars in an area near Lake Merwin, Wash., Tuesday. The station said the Seattle office of the FBI confirmed the Army activity was connected with the Thanksgiving Eve hijack.
A MAN using the name D. B. Cooper highjacked a Northwest 727 on a flight from Portland to Seattle. At Seattle, Cooper demanded and received $200,000 ransom money and four parachutes.
After the money and parachutes were delivered to the plane the craft took off for Reno, Nev., and FBI agents said somewhere along the route Cooper parachuted from the plane. They feel southwestern Washington, was the most likely spot.
Earlier this year a Portland FBI agent told UPI that as soon as warm weather returned the FBI planned to launch a full-scale search for Cooper.
FEDERAL agents feel the hijacker did not survive the jump in near-zero temperatures and his body and the $200,000 must be in the surrounding hills.
It was believed the Army units were camping in a park belonging to Pacific Power and Light here.
