FBI not fooled for a minute
An FBI spokesman said Monday that the photo of a man who claimed to be D.B. Cooper in Portland last week has no re- semblance to the composite drawing of the nation's first skyjacker.
A man who claimed he was Cooper went to the Portland Police Bureau's Cen- tral Precinct early Thursday and said he wanted to turn himself in. Since skyjack- ing is a federal crime, police called the FBI.
The FBI told the officer to take a pic- ture of the man and have him report to the FBI on Friday. The FBI talked to the man then by phone.
He failed to appear.
During the telephone conversation, the FBI asked the man questions only the real D.B. Cooper could answer. The man could not answer some questions and gave false answers to others, according to Bill Wil- liams, bureau spokesman.
"Based on an evaluation of the incident it would appear that this is simply one more of the numerous hoaxes which have taken place over the years," said Wil- liams.
Cooper is the name used by a man who hijacked a Northwest Airlines Boeing 727 on a flight from Portland to Seattle on Thanksgiving Eve 1971. He parachuted from the plane somewhere over South- west Washington after first getting $200,000 from the airline and letting pas- sengers off in Seattle.
"During the past three weeks the pub- licity associated with the 10th anniver- sary of the hijacking and the release of a movie relating to it, the FBI has received numerous telephone calls and visits from individuals purporting to be D.B. Cooper, have a portion of the ransom or knowl- edge of the crime," said Williams. "Each contact has been evaluated and an appro- priate investigation conducted."
