A review of Los Angeles File 76-8204, captioned "JOHN RICHARD MERIT, aka, CRV" reveals that MERIT escaped from El Segundo, California Police Department Officers in July, 1971, and attempted to draw a weapon, became violent at the time of arrest by Bureau Agents, San Diego, California, in 1968.
MERIT was released from the Federal Correctional Institute, Terminal Island, California, in February, 1971, and was a suspect in wide spread violent crimes from the time of his release to the time of his arrest in Louisiana on 12/3/71.
MERIT's description and other characteristics as appear in Los Angeles File indicate he should be considered a possible suspect in this matter, however, information in these files indicate he may well have been in the Birmingham, Alabama or Baton Rouge, Louisiana area on 11/24/71.
Los Angeles Files indicate that prior contact with MERIT's mother in Long Beach revealed she was uncooperative.
JOHN RICHARD MERIT, as JACK PARKER, was shot and arrested after a running gun battle with Louisiana authorities on 12/3/71, and was a suspect in a kidnapping - murder and did shoot and kill a hostage in connection with the arrest on 12/3/71. MERIT did survive.
By airtel dated 12/29/71, the Birmingham Division transmitted copies of a FD-302 to New Orleans and Jacksonville, which contained the results of an [redacted] Alabama. This airtel indicates [redacted] White female, who had [redacted] JOHN RICHARD MERIT in Birmingham, Alabama during October and the early part of November, 1971, and indicates she last knew him to be in Birmingham, Alabama previous to Thanksgiving
